The Objects Standard

Every object we make passes this. If it can't, we don't ship it, or we don't call it ours. This document is public because a promise you can't check isn't a promise.

Principles

What we believe

An object should outlive its owner's interest in replacing it.

Most things are designed to be thrown away and priced as though they weren't. We build the other kind.

You should be able to open it.

An object you can't get inside is an object you don't own.

It should work without us.

If this studio closes tomorrow, everything we've made still works. Forever.

The care should be visible.

Function is the requirement, not the goal. What makes an object special is the intention spent past the point where it was necessary.

Commitment 1

It opens

Commitment 2

It's serviceable

Commitment 3

Parts exist

Commitment 4

It's sovereign

Commitment 5

It's documented

Every object ships with, or publishes:

Commitment 6

It's upgradable where upgrading makes sense

Commitment 7

Materials are honest

The refusals

What we won't do

The sunset clause

Nothing becomes an orphan

If Special Objects ceases operating, we will publish everything: design files, schematics, firmware source, mechanical drawings, supplier documentation, and tooling records for every object we ever sold โ€” under a license permitting anyone to manufacture, repair, and modify them.

Versions

This is version 0.1. It will change, and every version stays published, so you can see what we changed and when.

If an object of ours fails this standard, tell us. That's a defect, not a preference. jordan.snyder@gmail.com
